This page lists a range of Web2.0 applications that are useful for busy teachers.

These are applications that you may use in your everyday life as well as when preparing, researching and writing units of work. Where possible, a note will explain some ways that a teacher might use the tool.

Portable Apps Now you can carry your favorite computer programs along with all of your bookmarks, settings, email and more with you. Use them on any Windows computer. All without leaving any personal data behind. works with any hardware you like (USB flash drive, iPod, portable hard drive, etc). It's open source built around an open format that any hardware vendor or software developer can use. It's 100% free to use, free to copy and free to share.

Your favorite news, weather, sports, entertainment, photos, videos, music, email and much more – all on one page that you can access from anywhere. What's more, you can collaborate on your page with your friends, or publish it to the world. Teachers can use it as a repository for links to sites or feeds that they want their students to listen to or watch by creating Pagecasts which are pages which users share with other users. There are two types of Pagecasts: Group Pagecasts are pages that are shared between friends or the members of a group and that can be viewed by invited members only. Public Pagecasts are pages which users have published to the entire world.

igoogle.gifCreate a personalized iGoogle page that gives you at-a-glance access to key information from Google and across the web. On this self-designed page, you can choose and organize content such as Gmail, daily news to use in the classroom, RSS feeds from student blogs, wikis or podcasts. Bookmarks for quick access to your favorite sites from any computer. Or add your own section with content you find from across the web.

external image bl-logo-large.png Bloglines is a FREE online service that helps you subscribe to and manage lots of web information, such as news feeds, weblogs and audio. Bloglines tracks the information you're interested in, retrieves new stuff as it happens, and organizes everything for you on your own personal web news page.
Delicious is a great way to keep track of all the websites that you come across as you are researching, planning, surfing the web. The primary use of del.icio.us is to store your bookmarks online, which allows you to access the same bookmarks from any computer and add bookmarks from anywhere, too. One idea is to create accounts for your school so that staff and students can add sites that they come across.
Even better is the fact that if you are in my network, I can share the links that I find with you, by sending my delicious links to you. They will be found in Links for you.

mailbigfile.gifMailBigFile Most email accounts don't allow you to send large files by email. Here is a free site where you can upload a large file. It will then prompt you to type in the recipient's email. Then they will recieve an email with a link to the site and a prompt to download the file. Very simple to use.

flickr.jpgFlickr is a photo sharing website and web services suite, and an online community platform. It was one of the earliest Web 2.0 applications. In addition to being a popular Web site for users to share personal photographs, the service is widely used by bloggers as a photo repository and is a great place to search for copyright free images.

tinyurl.gifTiny URL Are you sick of posting URLs in emails only to have it break when sent causing the recipient to have to cut and paste it back together? Then you've come to the right place. By entering in a URL in the text field below, we will create a tiny URL that will not break in email postings and never expires.

skype.jpgis great for making free calls over the internet to anyone else who has Skype. Uses voice and webcam as well as a chat and conference facility. Has proven to be a great collaboration tool between teachers, classrooms and students. Think of it as an essential form of communication for global projects.

The power of twitter is in the conversations that can be had with liked minded people. A fabulous tool for creating a really strong personal learning network.

There are some fantastic mailing lists that are really worth belonging to for teachers.

The Teacher's List is a weekly email from Pete Mackay a teacher in Canada. It is usually a link to something useful that another teacher has found on the web. It's a great way to get some great ideas for the classroom. You can either subscribe to have it delivered by email or subscribe to the RSS feed from the blog.
