Another challenge for teachers is to discourage students from using copyrighted music for the creation of soundtracks for videos and digital stories. Here are some links to a range of sites where students can freely use music to add to their creations.


What is a Podcast? Podcasts are an Audio broadcast available on the Web. You can download podcasts for free to a personal computer or a digital audio player. A podcast can be played through a variety of digital audio software and hardware. They are not limited to the iPod brand products developed by Apple.

soundscape.gifSoundsnap is a free online sound library and community for sound designers and producers. People can upload sounds and share them with the world.

voicethread.gifVoiceThread is basically group conversations around images, docs and videos. You can transform your presentations, projects and media into rich collaborative spaces. It's use in classrooms is very powerful and unlimited. Here is a great example of its use in the classroom.

Yack Pack is a simple easy to use tool which enables teachers and students to capture their ideas and reflections using their voice rather than text. They can belong to a number of different 'packs'

googlevideo.gifGoogle Video is a free video sharing and video search engine service from Google that allows anyone to upload video clips to Google's web servers as well as make their own media available free of charge. Searches includes other video hosting sites such as Youtube and Teachertube.

Ways to access videos for classroom use.
KeepVid- downloads videos from most video hosting sites- a very useful site to enable teachers to collect videos from sites such as YouTube to play back at school with or without internet connection. If you download an flv file you will also need to download flv player.

videopiggy.gif Is another program that lets you download YouTube videos and watch them on your computer, iPod, Sony PSP or mobile phone. It downloads video files and automatically converts them to appropriate file format (for example, files to be viewed on a PC have standard AVI format).

zamzar.gifZamzar is an online site where you can convert any video, sound, image or text file that you find on the web or on your computer into another filetype that can be played on your computer or Ipod etc. You simply locate the file, either by browsing to it or by copying the url. Then you select what type of file you want to convert it to. Nominate an email address to recieve the converted files and click convert.

Working with Images:

These sites offer ways to display, manage and change images on the web.
Try befunky as a cool way to change your photos in to cartoons, avatars etc. You can even cartoonise videos.

Flickr is a way to store, sort, search and share photos online. It helps you organize photos you have and offers a way for you and others to share, search and use images for a variety of purposes.

Picasa is a free software download from Google that helps you locate and organise all the photos on your computer, edit and add effects to your photos with a few simple clicks, share your photos with others through email, prints and on the web: it’s fast, easy and free.

picasaweb.gifGoogle Picasa Web allowa you to post photos and videos online, share photos with others.
You can set your albums to private or make your albums public and share with the Picasa community.
See big photos, scroll through them quickly, rotate and zoom. Have fun with captions and comments.
fd's Flickr Toys is a list of different things that you can do with Flickr images that you have already uploaded.

Resizing Images:

Many of the pictures that you take will need to be resized to be uploaded to the internet.

picresize.jpgPIXresizer is a free image resizer that easily creates web and e-mail friendly versions of your images with reduced file sizes. The reduced files are saved in a different folder, so your original images are not altered at all.

VSO's Image resizer is a lovely little free application, which can run off a USB stick (ie no installation). It does a batch resize in a flash, saves the images as a copy by default (can overwrite if preferred), output all files as (say) jpg even though the originals may be a combination of gif/jpg/bitmap etc... great for those without access to photoshop, PSP etc

Audio & Video & Images

Use myPlick to upload and share powerpoint shows that you have created. Powered by Google, you can convert your uploads into PDF and also embed them into your wikis and blogs. You can also upload and add your audio to your presentations.

bookr.gifBookr is is a tool to create and share your own photo book using your Flickr images.

skype.jpgis a social networking software for making free calls over the internet to anyone else who has Skype. Uses voice and webcam Has proven to be a great collaboration tool between teachers, classrooms and students. Essentail form of communication for global projects.

voki.gifOur kids love Vokis. Voki enables users to express themselves on the web in their own voice using a talking character. You can customize your Voki to look like you or take on the identity of lots of other types of characters… animals, monsters, anime etc. Your Voki can speak with your own voice which is added via microphone, upload, or phone. Voki lives on your blog, social network profile.


Technically not a Web 2.0 application. But a fantastic way to create slideshows using digital photos. You can touch-up, crop, or rotate pictures and add special effects, soundtracks, and voice narration. Personalize them with titles and captions. Small file sizes make it easy to send photo stories in an e-mail. Watch them on your TV, a computer, or a Windows Mobile–based portable device.
